Reception Platfoms

Reception Platforms are how we listen too, or receive our radio. 
In order to receive radio signals, there must first be an aerial to receive the signal and then convert them to an audio through our stereos in our car or wherever we are. This is known as terrestrial reception. 

Satellite reception is when a signal is beamed into a satellite in space which will then send the signal to anywhere with a subscription and a satellite receiver dish. In the United Kingdom, this will usually mean your SKY dish, however there are others which receive foreign channels other than this. 

When using the internet there are two ways we can listen to or watch video/audio files. The first way is to download the file straight to your computer and then watch the file when that is complete, or you can start a progressive download of the file which means that the file doesn't download to your computer permanently - this way is called streaming. 
An example of this is when you listen to a radio station online. You're listening live and therefore can't download all the songs that they play, therefore instead your computer connects to the station and receives an ongoing audio feed/stream with the radio stations programming. 

On Demand radio is a new form of listening to music whenever and wherever you are. Radio stations will now make their shows available to listen to on their websites or in the form of a blog or podcast. 
This means that if you haven't time to listen to the radio when you wanted to, you could simply listen to the recorded version of it. 

In recent years the radio has made even more changes that make listening to music easier. With an internet connection, you can listen to streaming audio from almost any radio station in the world. 
The podcast is also new for radio. This is where individuals put together a recording that resembles a radio show and then post it online for people to listen too.  
In addition to this, there are subscription based radio services, such as Sirius and XM which are not controlled by federal regulations in the same way that normal airwaves are. This gives the listener/broadcaster more options to fit their listening pleasure. They are also commercial-free which is a bonus in the radio industry. 
Like television, radio programmes are becoming more enticing to people allover the world because of their simplicity and availability. 

Distribution Technologies

These days, there are many ways in which radio stations can distribute their show to the public. This can be done in many different ways. For example, podcasts for MP3 players or online.
A station can also get their show out by transmitting it normally using a large aerial on top of their office which distributes the radio signals within a certain boundary. When you leave these boundaries, you cannot receive the signal, and therefore cannot listen to that station.

The more distribution techniques a radio station have, the more listeners they will have. Different forms of distribution is also good as it means that when the audience is unable to listen to the radio, they can catch up on the show via the podcast.
Podcasts are a way in which radio stations can distribute their shows. It is a type of digital media which consists of Video, PDF, ePub files and audio. This is then uploaded to a website enabling a computer or a mobile device allowing access to a podcast. The BBC and Absolute Radio have podcasts on their websites.
These links will take you to their websites. Each website also enables you to download the podcasts and listen online which means that if you wish, you can listen to them repeated times wherever you are. 
Another form of distribution is BBC iPlayer which is a free online service and can be accessed by anyone with an Internet connection. It allows you to catch up on on programmes you have missed out on, but also streams live shows which you can watch.

Often, Independent production companies will made and advert, show or jingle at their home studio, edit it the way they want, save it as a .wav or .mp3 file and then send it via email to the radio broadcaster who will have paid them to produce it.

Digital Radio Technologies

In the UK we are switching to a digital radio which is DAB (digital audio broadcasting). In the rest of the world, they are opting for DRM (digital radio mondile). DAB radio gives listeners access to a lot more radio stations than FM and AM. 

The DAB standard orignated as a European research project in the 1980's. The Norweigan Broadcasting Corporation  launced the very first DAB cannel in the world on June, 1, 1995. You can find more information on them by following this link - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NRK.

In 2012 there are four digital wireless radio systems recognized by the ITU: the two European systems DAB digital audio broadcasting system, and DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale), the Japanese ISDB-T and the U.S. HD-Radio (IBOC).

There are many advantages of this type of radio, a few examples are: 
- Pause and Rewind. Some digital radios have features which enable you to pause and rewind live radio, and some even allow recording. 
List by station name. The stations will be listed by name so you don’t have to remember the frequencies. With some digital radios you can have stations listed in the order of those you listen to most, making them quicker to find.


Digital radio doesn't always provide better sound quality than FM. When FM is working well it can offer a better quality than DAB. 

The UK wish to have completed the Digital Radio switchover for 2015. 

There are a few problems with the digital switchover, with some saying it could take up to 20 years to do properly. 
One of the main problems is that if the viewer wants to listen to DAB radio, they are going to have to go out and buy the correct set to listen to it on. Also, half of all mainstream car manufacturers do not offer any digital radio units for their model range.

Introduction

In this assignment I will be looking into the new technologies which have been introduced into the radio industry. These technologies include: Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), Digital Modiale (DRM), the future of FM and DAB, analogue-digital switchover issues, level of digital take-up, digital radio ownership, Freesat and Wi-Fi.
